After a thrilling performance in 2016, the virtuoso and one of the fastest pianists in the world Lubomyr Melnyk returns to Šiška with a new, widely praised album. The guardian of the renowned Erased Tapes label is considered a pioneer of t. i. “continuous music”, and has taken his unique way of playing all over the world, including to prestigious venues such as London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Inspired by the musician’s travels in Europe in recent years, December’s Fallen Trees was hailed by Drowned In Sound as “a work of quiet – yet defiant – beauty by a true giant of modern classical music”, The Line of Best Fit as “a supremely crafted, elegiac album”, and PopMatters as “a work of uncommon beauty”, to name but a few. In addition to collaborations with Japanese vocalist Hatis Noit, German cellist Anne Müller and American singer David Allred, all members of the Erased Tapes family, the album also boasts one of the most challenging compositions ever written by a piano magician, the title track Fallen Trees.
Lubomyr Melnyk, a classically trained Ukrainian pianist, is a true innovator, exploring new directions in contemporary music. Influenced by the minimalist movements of the early 1970s, he developed a completely original piano language, named after the principle of maintaining a continuous, uninterrupted sound flow. His fast and complex note structures have made him one of the fastest concert pianists in the world. With a virtuoso playing technique, he creates overtones that blend, collide or even form new melodies at moments, thus shaping the composition beyond its original form.
